Inner Soul Spotlight: Erykah Badu & Marvin Sapp

Inner Soul Spotlight: a weekly feature that will highlight the music that either fueled my week or has made me excited to love music as I do.  If you believe that there is an artist that I would enjoy shining the spotlight on, please reach out to me at

Public success, private failure or vice versa — I have heard all along that God gives you no more than He knows that you can bare — sometimes, it’s really difficult to accept that.  Life is full of challenges.  We all struggle; some harder than others. Marvin Sapp‘s music has the ability to reach my inner core, pull out all the hurt and turn it around before song’s end ~ leaving me in full praise, thanking God for sorrows and joy, with hands raised!  When  he gets totally caught up and his voice turns to squelch it takes me to a point of no return.  That’s it — I’m done and driving, walking, no matter — eyes fully tear up and God is moving all through me.  Marvin Sapp’s recent release, Here I Am is making history on music charts like Billboard.  There is one song in particular on this cd that blows me away, He Has His Hands On You is a testament that God is with you at all times, watching, protecting, sheltering even when you are feeling totally alone in the throes of life.

I have always hated the comparison that I’ve heard of Erykah Badu to Jill Scott!  Always!  They are both beautiful sisters with totally different sounds, styles, etc.  If there is a word in existence to what a die-hard Badu fan should be called, then dub me whatever that would be.  She’s never done anything that I’ve trashed.  I may not have liked it as much as something else in her repertoire, but there was definitely a reason to find me smiling as I delved into the deeper meaning of her lyrics.  Returning this coming week with her new project, New Amerykah Part Two, the accompanying video to the first single, Window Seat is out and causing tongues to wag.  As I watched (intrigued of course), I kept thinking — Erykah’s about to hit us with something deep and damn, if she didn’t before all was said and done.  Check it out for yourself…

Erykah Badu  can do NO wrong by me!
